I was reading something that led me to investigate what a Spit Hood is, and I came across the "Spit Sock" website. These products are designed to protect law enforcement personnel from being spit upon by people in their custody. Apparently they don't usually get applied until someone has spit at least once. The rationale is that spit can carry communicable diseases - plus, I would imagine it's really gross to have someone spit in your face.
Anyway, the Spit Sock website -
http://www.spitsock.com/what.htm - says it protects against colds, pink eye, meningitis, strep throat, etc. And then it says:
Are you 100% sure that AIDS isn't transmitted by spit?
Wow. This is 2009, and we're still fearmongering about AIDS, and suggesting misinformation. Yes, we
are sure AIDS isn't transmitted by spit, it is a blood-borne pathogen! What is with these people?!
There's an email address at the bottom of the page; I plan to write and complain.
