Pretty much everybody in the U.S. has heard of Rockstar energy drinks. They have a line of coffee drinks too, Rockstar Roasted. But did you know the original Rockstar drink was created by radio's right-wing shock jock, Michael Savage?

That's good info, thanks! I'll be sticking with the blue (low calorie) Monster from now on.

Red Bull has no ties to anti-gay causes, but I did find an article about one of their competitors (Glacéau, the maker of Vitaminenergy) making subtle gay jokes: http://www.advocate.com/exclusive_detail_ektid54716.asp

NRG has been discontinued: http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/nrg/

Monster has been widely criticized by anti-gay homophobes for being "too gay."

Thanks! I've been busy with school and haven't had a chance to look this stuff up.

I'll check on Red Bull, NRG, and Monster to see where they stand on LGBT issues. Will post as soon as I find something.

Rockstar was founded by Michael Savage's son, Russell Goldencloud Weiner. Savage (whose real name is Michael Weiner) did help formulate the drink (apparently, he has a background as an herbalist) and the business is a bit of a "family affair."

Even if Savage does not derive economic benefit from the sales, Goldencloud (he actually goes by Russel, but who can resist?) appears to share his father's beliefs and certainly makes public appearances with the father. Weiner the Younger has announced at events, "I am proud to be Savage's son!" He has also called out, ""Who's heterosexual and proud?" and after the cheers died, "If you're not, hopefully you will be soon!"

Savage, among his many insensitive and inappropriate comments, has told a gay caller to "get AIDS and die."

Does he still make revenue off the sales of the energy drink? Are Rockstar's competitors Red Bull, NRG, and Monster more gay friendly?
